Your Carbon Footprint on Mother Earth

Find out how to reduce your carbon footprint

Most of us do not cherish the fact that our consumption directly and indirectly affects our environment. We often use products, fuel our homes and vehicles, go on vacations, and eat without even considering the impact such activities have on the layers within our atmosphere. However, we are not at fault for this ignorance. Things like eating and traveling are essential and therefore not considered misuse of our resources even though these acts do impact the atmosphere. Though some individuals participate in manufacturing of extremely harmful substances, most of us have no idea that we are contributing to the detriment of our planet.

The carbon imprint is the measure of impact our usage of products, and fuels that contain carbon dioxide (CO2) has on the environment and everyone has one. In fact, each person has a primary footprint and a secondary one. The primary footprint is the measurement of our direct impact on the environment that is brought about by intentional usage of fuels and products that harm the environment; this includes things like fueling a vehicle and traveling (plane, train, boat) for vacation.

The secondary footprint is much harder to measure because it is an analysis of the impact that the indirect usage of harmful substances has on our environment. The secondary footprint includes buying products that emitted CO2 during manufacturing. An example of this is purchasing groceries. That food needed to be prepared, cooked (in some cases), and transported. All these steps in the production process result in emission of CO2 of which the individual was not directly responsible for.

Although some have a deeper carbon footprint than others, we can all do our part to lighten our own so that it is not so deep. Due to our environmental state today, many organizations are coming up with ways to live greener. These green initiatives identify ways to produce and use products in a more efficient way that is less harmful on our environment. Scientists and environmentalists are discovering the fact that if we do not do something now, the human race might face extinction sooner rather than later. But, if we all do a little bit to help, it will be much better for us all in the long run.
